MOSES LAKE — For Moses Lake High School students Ashlie Shryack and Aislinn Hastings, selling fireworks is more than just a fund-raising project.
It’s a time to socialize and learn some work skills.
“It’s great because it gives Ashlie and me a chance to hang out and we get to meet people in the community we’ve never met before,” said Hastings, a junior. “It also helps us with our social skills because we have to learn how to treat customers, how to talk to all different types of people and how to sell stuff.”
The girls and the rest of the Moses Lake Band Boosters club members are selling fireworks from now through July 4. The 50 students take shifts so someone is available to sell fireworks all day.
“This is a tradition our club does every year,” said Shryack, a senior. “The proceeds from this fund-raiser help us purchase the things we need for band, like equipment and instruments. The money also goes toward a trip we take every spring for a choir tour.”
The fireworks stand is located at Wheeler Road and Road L near Moses Lake. Hours from today until July 3 are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 4.
“We hope to sell all of our fireworks,” Hastings said. “We have a great variety of items that would be fun for families to have for the Fourth of July.”
There are around 70 different kinds of fireworks available. Prices range from $80 cents to $100.
“This is a great local cause for people to support,” Hastings said. “We perform in many parades here throughout the year, so the more help we get from the community; the better we will be able to perform for them.”
The girls had already sold about one dozen fireworks by Thursday afternoon. They still had six hours to go before their shifts were up.
“We are hopeful things will start to pick up,” Shryack said. “We’ve been texting all our friends about it and telling them to get their friends to come by too.”
