Driver killed, two teenage passengers not seriously injured

OTHELLO — Brittney R. Almaguer, 20, Othello, died in a crash near Othello Monday.

Two 17-year-old Othello females were involved in the collision.

The three females were in the area of Miller Road and Hatton Road allegedly lighting fireworks at about 4:30 a.m., Adams County Sheriff Doug Barger stated. A landowner saw the fireworks being lit and went to the location.

Upon seeing the landowner, the females reportedly left in a 2008 Chevrolet Impala with Almaguer driving, he stated.

“Near McKinney Road and Hatton Road, the landowner parked his vehicle in front of the Chevrolet,” Barger explained. “The Chevrolet then backed away and turned, leaving at a high rate of speed. The landowner did not give chase but followed, losing sight of the vehicle due to speed.”

Almaguer reportedly turned east onto Hatton Road.

“Near Linda Lane, the Chevrolet veered to the north side of the road and lost control going through a barbed wire fence and came to rest in a field after rolling,” he stated.

Almaguer was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt, authorities reported.

“The two 17-year-old girls in the vehicle both had seat belts on and received minor injuries,” Barger stated. “They were transported by the Othello ambulance to the Othello Community Hospital and treated and released.”

Authorities reportedly located alcohol, a small amount of marijuana and fireworks inside the vehicle, he noted.

“The Adams County Coroner will determine if an autopsy will be performed,” Barger explained. “The investigation is continuing.”
