Plenty to go around.

Local nonprofit Cancer and Community Charities (3Cs) announced this week it has raised $78,000 this past year that it will distribute among 26 Kootenai County charities.

The number is just above the $75,000 raised the year before, said spokeswoman Bobbi Freeman.

"It feels great," Freeman said. "I love raising money for the community. I love the fact that we give it to so many."

As has been done since its creation in the 1960s, the women's group raises money for local nonprofits each year through fundraisers like a fashion show and golf tournament, as well as fees collected among its activity groups like 3Cs bowling group and the 3Cs book club.

"We give away whatever we make, and we have fun doing it," Freeman said.

Local nonprofits apply to receive funds from 3Cs, Freeman said, and the group's appropriations committee determines which organizations receive how much, based on need.

This year, the organizations that will be given donations include: Alzheimer's Association, Anchor House, Birthright of Coeur d'Alene, Coeur d'Alene Elk's Lodge, Cancer Patient Care, Children's Village, Coeur d'Alene Press Christmas for All, Coeur d'Alene Homes, Family Promise of North Idaho, Fresh Start, Harmony Ranch, Hospice of North Idaho, Idaho Drug Free Youth, Kootenai Cancer Center/Kootenai Health Foundation, Kootenai County Food Bank/Community Action Partnership, Meals on Wheels/Lake City Senior Center, The Mary House, NAMI, North Idaho Project Linus, Post Falls Food Bank, Rathdrum Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul, Senior Christmas Cheer Project, TESH, Trinity Group Homes, and Walden House.

"They really need it more than ever, that's for sure, because so many organizations have not received federal funds or state funds as they used to," Freeman said.

The charities will find out how much they've been given at the 3Cs Annual Community Appreciation Brunch, scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 at The Coeur d'Alene Resort, where the 3Cs will hand out checks to nonprofit representatives.

Tickets are $25, and reservations are required.

To obtain tickets, call Judy Gardner at 664-4604.

Aside from entertainment and a meal, the event will also have representatives from the 3Cs to answer questions for potential members.

"We want to keep this going. We're always looking for new members," Freeman said. "It's just a wonderful organization of around 550 women who love to raise money to help the community."
