Plans to rebuild a storage barn at the Grant County Historical Museum are moving forward.

EPHRATA — Plans to rebuild a storage barn at the Grant County Historical Museum are moving forward.

A fire destroyed the barn, containing stored artifacts, in August 2009.

Initial ideas for rebuilding were submitted by the historical society in October, including a ?storage and display areas.

The request calls for a 60-foot-wide by 140-foot-long building with a carport, but does not include anything inside the building.

Grant County Fairground and Facilities Manager Vern Cummings said he is looking at a pre-manufactured shell as an option, because it is less expensive. The design on the inside of the building will need to be determined by the historical society.

“It’s just an empty building,” he said. “There isn’t a need for an architect ... We don’t even have a feel for what’s going to happen ... Of course the price is very important. They (the historical society) don’t have a lot of money.”

Commissioner Richard Stevens said the insurance company is paying $220,000 to start the project and may pay up to $400,000 if the project requires more money. The company how much it will pay for the items stored in the barn.

The deadline for the proposals is Aug. 25.
