BASEBALL/SOFTBALL
Kodie Kolden of Post Falls won the 9-10 age division in the Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run Mariners baseball team championship on June 20 after the Mariners-Cincinnati Reds game at Safeco Field in Seattle.
Jonny Plum of Hayden placed third in the boys 11-12 age division.
A Mariners girls softball team championship was also held for the first time. Reilly Williams of Coeur d'Alene won the 9-10 age division; Abby Howard of Post Falls captured the 11-12 age division; Kylie Rasmussen of Dalton Gardens placed second in the 13-14 age division; and Madison Fernimen of Dalton Gardens took third in the 7-8 age group.
Participants were scored in three events - pitching for accuracy, hitting for distance and accuracy, and a timed run over 160 feet including tagging third base and touching home plate. Each event is assigned a point value based on number of pitches thrown for strikes, net length of the hit, and quickness of the run. The three scores are combined to determine the total overall score.
The top three scores across the country qualified to compete Monday at the All-Star Game in Anaheim, Calif. Kolden's, Williams' and Howard's overall combined scores were not high enough to move on to that level.
The local athletes qualified for the Mariners team championship by winning their age group at the sectional competition in Hayden.
The Mariners team championship consisted of winners at the local level in Idaho, Washington, Montana, Oregon, Alaska and British Columbia.
