Rathdrum Days to honor Jacklins

RATHDRUM - It's time to celebrate the restoration of the old county jail and the completion of its new annex.
And Don and Dorothy Jacklin are the guests of honor.
The Jacklins, who have contributed about $450,000 to the projects, will be the grand marshals of the Rathdrum Days parade on Saturday on Main Street at 10 a.m.
"No way, no how would we have been able to finish the projects without their generosity," said Ellen Larsen of the Rathdrum/Westwood Historical Society, which has been working on the restoration several years.
Don Jacklin said his family is honored to be a "small part" of the restoration and its contributions are a way of giving back to the community for its business success.
"Though our contribution has been financial, the real accomplishment has been done by the citizens, community, city and history society of Rathdrum," Don said. "They are really the parties that accomplished the heavy lifting in creating this masterpiece."
Jacklin said the community has provided support for Jacklin Seed Company. Rathdrum Mayor Vic Holmes, Jacklin said, is an example of an "indirect employee" that provided benefits to the family company.
"Mayor Holmes, as a teenager, changed irrigation pipe and participated in seed harvest operations for HCR Farms, a major farmer/supplier of exclusive seed product for Jacklin Seed Company," Jacklin said.
"Contributions of a personal nature to Dorothy and me are also a significant part of our Rathdrum community enjoyment. We have spent many years of evenings at the Old Shady, dancing and sharing life with others, and we always cherish the years and years of fine dining at the Old Westwood Inn."
A grand opening of the jail and tours will be held after the parade until 4 p.m. on Saturday. A breakfast fundraiser, which includes biscuits and gravy or jam, coffee and juice and will be provided by the society, will be held at the jail from 7-10 a.m.
The annex, which will be used as a community area for presentations, traveling exhibits and other events, will be dedicated after the parade and a plaque will be presented to the Jacklins. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be spent on equipment and chairs for the annex.
The annex was finished this week and the front portion of the jail and the outside are complete.
"It's amazing how beautiful it is," said Larsen, adding that more work needs to be done with the cell room. "It should help make Rathdrum a destination and help businesses in town."
That's why the Jacklins have assisted the project.
"We've always liked the thought of that being a historical building and we'd hate to see it go to dust," Dorothy said before another ceremony honoring them. "I think that it will be a good drawing card for Rathdrum, and we're excited to have it in our future."
Don, who operates a ranch just outside Rathdrum, is partners with brothers Duane and Doyle Jacklin with Riverbend Commerce Park, Jacklin Investments and Jacklin Land Co.
Rathdrum Days, which offers a variety of family entertainment, kicks off today from noon to 9 p.m. It continues on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The events are at Lakeland High, Lakeland Junior High and on Main Street.
There will be music, crafts, commercial and food vendors, kids activities, a car show, 3-on-3 basketball tournament and wiener dog races.
