COEUR d'ALENE - An unusual drifter showed up on Hayden Lake Road on Thursday morning.

In footed pajamas and with a pacifier.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department responded to a 3 a.m. call when the owner of the Clark House found a 2-year-old wandering in the street.

The bed and breakfast owner was prompted to check outside when he heard the sound of a baby crying, said Lt. Stuart Miller.

He discovered the little boy alone and tearful.

When deputies arrived the child refused to speak, Miller said.

"Of course he's 2 - at three in the morning, he's probably not a chatty kid," Miller said.

Deputies went door to door with the boy, and within the hour a neighbor identified the child as belonging to the home across the street from the Clark House.

The parents, whose names weren't included in the sheriff's report, told the deputies they hadn't even realized the baby left.

The mother said the boy must have gotten out of his crib, walked upstairs and left the house.

He is capable of unlocking and opening doors, she told them.

"It seems like the kid just got up and decided to take a walk in the dark," Miller said.

The boy was uninjured, and no charges were filed against the parents.
