SUV bulls over cinderblock wall at Hayden hotel

HAYDEN - A sport utility vehicle on Friday toppled a cinderblock and brick wall built to protect a mechanical area next to a Hayden hotel.
The SUV climbed on top of three of the hotel's air-conditioning units, destroying at least one. The vehicle nearly struck a large utility box.
The accident happened shortly before 3 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites, located at 151 W. Orchard Ave.
A forklift hoisted the 2004 Ford Explorer off the mechanical equipment and crushed wall, then placed the vehicle on a flatbed truck to be hauled away.
Kootenai County sheriff's officials said Mariana A. Scruggs, 69, of Missoula, was maneuvering her SUV into a parking spot at the hotel when she crashed into the wall.
There were no injuries reported in the accident, although medical personnel did respond to the scene and evaluate Scruggs, the sheriff's department said.
Jennifer Ross, marketing director at the Holiday Inn Express, said Scruggs had four passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Ross said a hotel surveillance camera showed the SUV pull into the parking spot, then shift into reverse to straighten out, then slowly pull forward in the spot before suddenly accelerating and toppling the wall.
Northern Lakes Fire District responded, along with Avista Utilities and the sheriff's department.
The sheriff's office said it has closed its investigation.
