POST FALLS - After facing off early Saturday morning, they'll settle the seeds today as the Lewis-Clark Twins and Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen will face off in the Class AA Area A (district) championship game today at noon at Post Falls High.

The Lewis-Clark Twins defeated the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen 14-7 in the first game on Saturday and Coeur d'Alene eliminated Prairie in the final game on Saturday 19-10 to move into the championship game. Earlier, Prairie ousted Trail 11-10.

If Coeur d'Alene wins today's game at noon, an if necessary game will be played to determine the top seed out of the area immediately following.

Both teams advance to the Class AA state tournament starting Thursday at Timberline High in Boise.

Lewis-Clark 14, Coeur d'Alene 7: "What it came down to today was some things going right for us and not so well for Coeur d'Alene," Lewis-Clark coach Tom Grunenfelder said. "Beau (Kerns) came in and threw really well for us today. He got to about 120 pitches before we had to pull him out."

It is the 10th straight time that Grunenfelder has led the Twins to state and was the Twins' 16th straight win this season.

"It's going to depend on who gets hot down there," Grunenfelder said. "Usually it depends on pitching depth and we've got some of that and we've played well down the stretch. This team's got a chance to go far. Anything less than a state title is a disappointment for these kids."

Kerns struck out six in eight innings on the mound for Lewis-Clark (33-6).

"It was my mentality to go out and go as long as I could," Kerns said. "I got into a bit of trouble in the fifth inning, but I was glad we got the win to get to state."

Lewis-Clark opened a 10-0 lead after four innings, scoring six runs on two outs as Kasey Knigge hit a two-run double to center and designated hitter Taylor Marshall followed with a three-run home run.

"We had a lot of timely hits today," Grunenfelder said.

Tanner Hollingsworth had five hits and three RBIs for the Twins.

Coeur d'Alene scored four times in the fifth inning and added another in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Jason Pattis. Derek Priano struck out three in the loss for Coeur d'Alene.

"Derek did a great job against them today," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "He just didn't get the support he needed at the plate. He's a fun pitcher to watch."

Chad Nyquist hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning for the Lumbermen.

Prairie 11, Trail 10: Kurt South drove in the winning run for the Cardinals in the ninth inning to defeat the Jays in a loser-out game.

Joey Underwood had three hits for Trail, which concludes the season 19-23.

Coeur d'Alene 19, Prairie 10: Mitch Bevacqua had four hits with two doubles and three RBIs for the Lumbermen in the loser-out game.

"We knew what the goal was," Duman said. "We knew what we were playing for. Pattis threw well today and we put up eight runs. Prairie started chipping away and we had Alex Gunnerson come in and slam the door."

Matt Cade had a three-run double in the eighth to put the game out of reach for Coeur d'Alene (21-26).

"It's nice to get back to state," Duman said. "It should be a good experience for these guys."

Darnell Metcalf and Nik Leva had two RBIs apiece for Prairie, which concludes the season 15-27.

"When you give a team six errors, it's tough," Prairie coach Dustin Frank said. "Coeur d'Alene is going to earn some runs. It's the way the ball bounces sometimes."
