SWIMMING
CAST at Speedo meet: The Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team sent five elite athletes to the Speedo Champions Series July 20-24 at the Mt. Hood Aquatic Center in Gresham, Ore. - one of 19 sectional meets held around the nation each summer.
Bryce Kananowicz, Kjirsten Magnuson, Joseph Loftus, Patrick Loftus and Yunus Tezcan represented CAST at the meet, which featured hundreds of high caliber athletes and a handful of Olympic Trials qualifiers.
Kananowicz was CAST's top swimmer, setting Inland Empire Swimming records in three events (100- and 200-meter backstroke, 400 individual medley). Kananowicz, 14, now boasts a Junior National time standard, and is currently ranked fifth in the nation in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the nation in the 200 backstroke for his age group.
Magnuson was the highest placing CAST swimmer at the sectional meet, earning 13th place in the 50 freestyle. Both Kananowicz and Magnuson will attend Junior Nationals in Atlanta in December.

Crossfire champs: The Coeur d'Alene Sting under-13 girls soccer team (Croghan/Roop) went undefeated and won the Nike Crossfire Championship in Seattle on July 19.
The Sting won its first game against Surrey Guildford United Attack (Canada) 4-2. Cydney Roop scored two goals, and Halle Eborall and Cameron Croghan each had a goal. The Sting then beat Crossfire Premier Forrest (Seattle) 2-1. Isabella Scott and Caitlin Barber scored one goal each. The Sting then won 2-0 against Southside Soccer Aftershock (Oregon) with Sydney Quimby and Cameron Croghan both scoring one goal.
In the championship game, Coeur d'Alene Sting won in a shootout against Crossfire Premier. Cameron Croghan scored in regulation for the Sting. In the shootout, Sting goalkeeper Julia Roach, saved three of five shots for the victory.
FOOTBALL/BASKETBALL
Camps set at Coeur d'Alene High: Football and basketball camps for those entering grades 5-8 are scheduled for Aug. 2-4 at Coeur d'Alene High.
The football camp is from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the basketball camp is from 1:30-4 p.m.
Youths may attend one or both camps. Lunch and camp T-shirt will be provided.

COEUR d'ALENE RECREATION DEPARTMENT
Soccer registration: The City of Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department announces registration for youth fall soccer for all boys and girls grades K-7. Registration will be held Aug. 2-11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. at the recreation office, located at 710 Mullan Avenue in the lower level of Coeur d'Alene City Hall.
The league will start in mid-September and runs through the end of October.
Registration fees are $11 for Coeur d'Alene city residents and $22 for non-city residents.

Flag football registration: Signups for fall flag football for grades 2-3 will take place Aug. 2-31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department located in the City Hall at 710 Mullan Avenue.
Practices and games begin after Labor Day. Cost is $11 for city residents and $22 for non-residents.
