He received his first Purple Heart for wounds sustained while serving aboard the Battleship West Virginia at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

While serving aboard the heavy cruiser Pensacola, he received a second Purple Heart for wounds received at the Battle of Tassafaronga; the last night sea battle of the Guadalcanal campaign. He retired with over 20 years combined service in 1965. Jim was born in 1923 and raised in Honolulu Hawaii. He lived and worked in every Pacific coast state, several Gulf Coast states and several foreign countries before settling down in North Idaho 27 years ago.
