COEUR d'ALENE - The suspected kidnapper arrested Thursday after a several hour standoff with law enforcement officers is being held in Kootenai County jail without bond.

Joshua M. Moses, 28, of Post Falls, is charged with theft by extortion and kidnapping, according to the sheriff's department.

The man Moses kidnapped, Joshua Branam, 34, was arrested in Coeur d'Alene on drug charges the day before the standoff, which tipped police to Moses' whereabouts, Post Falls police said.

Branam is currently being held on $100,000 bond for possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia and parole violation.

Post Falls Police Chief Scot Haug said that Moses had kidnapped Branam earlier in the week because Branam owed Moses around $6,000. Moses allegedly took the victim, tied him up in the basement of the 17th Avenue home, struck him with a pistol and eventually contacted the victim's family for money.

The victim's family paid Moses $2,500, making the exchange in the Walmart parking lot in Post Falls, Haug said.

After Branam was arrested police, Kootenai County Sheriff's deputies and S.W.A.T. members surrounded Moses' residence before arresting him several hours later near the Spokane River as he attempted to flee the scene on foot.
