Cougars receive pairings for NCAA tournament

INDIANAPOLIS - The field of 64 teams competing for the 2010 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship was announced Monday and Washington State will be heading to Fayetteville, Ark., for their first round games.The national top eight seeds are Arizona St. (47-8), Texas (46-11), Florida (42-15), Coastal Carolina (51-7), Virginia (47-11), UCLA (43-13), Louisville (48-12) and Georgia Tech (45-13).

Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. The Cougars (34-20) will open the tournament Friday against Kansas State (36-20) at the Fayetteville, Ark., Regional is at 5:p.m. PDT. The winner will face the winner of the Arkansas (40-18) - Grambling (22-30) matchup on Saturday. Arkansas holds the regional's No. 1 seed, followed by WSU, KSU and Grambling as second through fourth seeds. The regional winner will advance to a best-of-three super regional series June 11-13 or June 13-14.Shea Vucinich, a former Coeur d'Alene High standout, is the starting shortstop for WSU, who won 9 of their last 12 Pac-10 games and 12 of their last 15 overall.
