SANDPOINT — A Missouri man is pleading not guilty to a drunken driving crash that might have cost a passenger part of her right arm.

Alexander Robert Bieg is charged with aggravated driving under the influence resulting in permanent disfigurement. He was ordered held in lieu of $10,000 bail on Tuesday, according to court documents.

The crash happened on Friday shortly before 10 p.m. near the junction of Laclede Ferry Road and River Run Drive, Idaho State Police said.

Bieg, a 23-year-old from St. Louis, was driving a utility terrain vehicle when it overturned on its passenger side, seriously injuring Callan E. Walla, 22, also of St. Louis.

Bieg told a Bonner County Sheriff’s deputy the UTV rolled when he took a corner too sharply. Walla’s arm was outside the all-terrain vehicle’s roll cage when it overturned, Bieg reportedly told the deputy.

Walla’s arm was barely attached and Deputy Kurt Lehman advised Bieg that it would likely have to be amputated below the elbow, the report said. Walla was taken to Kootenai Medical Center for treatment.

It was unclear Tuesday if doctors were able to save Walla’s arm. Deputy Prosecutor Roger Hanlon does not comment on pending cases and a trooper who investigated the crash was not immediately available.

Bieg, Walla and at least two other people were vacationing at a waterfront home in Laclede when the crash occurred. All are students of Missouri State University, according to court documents.

Bieg’s breath alcohol content was measured at 0.086 and 0.084, court records indicate.

Bieg’s defense counsel, Scot Nass, has entered a written not guilty plea on his client’s behalf and a preliminary hearing is pending in magistrate court.
