COEUR d'ALENE - A Coeur d'Alene man was transferred to Kootenai Medical Center Friday afternoon after his pickup truck lost control on Appleway Avenue and smashed into a neighborhood business.
Nicholas Warren, 29, was still being evaluated at the hospital Friday afternoon, but Idaho State Police said he suffered non-life threatening injuries from the single-car accident.
Witnesses said Warren was traveling westbound on Appleway Avenue toward Ramsey Road around 5 p.m. when he lost control of his silver Dodge Dakota truck on the rain-slicked street.
The truck hit the curb just near the intersecting street of West Lee Court and flew through the air before landing top-side up on the greenhouse fronting the Art and Home Center store.
"It was an explosion, a big crash, and then we heard the man screaming," said store owner John Motley, who was inside the business at the time. "We're just glad nobody was out there."
Motley said Warren, who was wearing his seat belt, was conscious and responsive. His arm was twisted in the seat belt and his forehead was bleeding.
Emergency responders removed him from the smashed cab after 5 minutes, authorities on scene said.
Witnesses said Warren seemed to be driving around 45 miles per hour in the 35 mph zone.
They said the driver immediately began calling for his dog after the wreck.
"It looked like a dachshund," said Matt Connery, who was walking his dog along the street and saw the crash, and the driver's dog run from the scene across the street. "It just took off (northbound) and kept going and going.
The greenhouse was worth around $12,000, Motley estimated.
Included in the damage was the store's front fence, but it was too early to estimate total damage costs, he said.
