RATHDRUM - Two schools in Rathdrum were locked down for about a half hour on Tuesday morning after a woman told police her husband was headed to Lakeland High to "unload" his shotgun, according to police.

The husband didn't show up and was in Coeur d'Alene when the woman called 911, left a message and hung up, Rathdrum Police Chief Kevin Fuhr said.

Both the high school and Lakeland Junior High were locked down from about 10:30 to 11 a.m.

"The husband and wife are in the midst of a divorce and the female may have some mental health issues," Fuhr said. "The allegations were false. When we contacted the husband, he had no intention of doing any harm."

Both schools were locked down because the couple has students at both, Fuhr said. Both schools also have the Lakeland name.

Police did not release the names of the man or woman because no charges were filed.

Fuhr said the woman didn't say why her husband was supposedly headed to the school in her message to police.

"We locked down both schools until it was determined where the husband was and we could make contact with the wife," Fuhr said. "Once we contacted both, we realized there was no threat."

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department assisted Rathdrum Police in responding to the schools.
