BEVERLY — A teenager was gunned down during a drive-by shooting Sunday night near Beverly and another teen was hospitalized.
Carlos D. Leyva, 17, Beverly, was found dead at the scene, Grant County Chief Deputy Courtney Conklin said.
“It is unknown if this was a random drive-by, a retaliatory drive-by or even if the incident was gang related,” stated Undersheriff John Turley. “The only witnesses to the incident are uncooperative with investigators.”
Leyva was shot in the chest, according to emergency services radio traffic.
Another 17-year-old male was hospitalized after being shot in the ankle, Conklin said. A third ran away.
Apparently the teenagers were walking along Road T.6 between Beverly and Schawana, he explained. As a vehicle drove past the teens, it appears the teens and a subject inside the vehicle began to argue.
After the vehicle drove past the teenagers, it turned around and came back, Conklin said. Someone inside the vehicle opened fire on the teens.
The suspect vehicle is described as possibly an older gold or tan Nissan sedan, he said. It is unclear how many people were in the vehicle.
The incident was reported by someone living along the roadway where the shooting took place.
The Grant County Coroner is scheduled to perform an autopsy on Leyva.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 509-754-2011.
