POST FALLS - A fire caused extensive damage to a Post Falls home on Monday morning.

The fire at 204 W. 13th St. was reported at 5:15 a.m. There were no injuries. An occupant who was at the home and three dogs made it out safely.

"Contents in the bedroom where the fire appears to have started were totally destroyed, as were much of the other furnishings and personal effects," said Jim Lyon, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue spokesman. "Contents from a back bedroom and garage were smoke and heat damaged."

No cause was determined. An investigation continues.

"It appears that it was not electrical," Lyon said.

Seth Weisenbach, the adult son of Liz Weisenbach, the home's owner, told firefighters that he was awakened from his bedroom in the garage area by smoke detectors sounding inside the home. He said he encountered smoke coming from a bedroom used by an adult male.

"Upon feeling the door and realizing it was hot, and not sure if the resident was present, Seth reportedly kicked open the door to find fire and smoke," Lyon said. "Seth attempted to extinguish the fire, but quickly realized it was not possible and also felt it was not occupied."

911 was then called.

Investigators hope to interview the adult male who occupies the room to determine a cause. According to the homeowner, he had been in the room and is typically there around that time.

The bed and some of the floor boards underneath it were destroyed.

"About eighty percent of the bedroom was a hole," Lyon said, adding that the exact point of origin is under investigation.

KCFR crews reported seeing flames and smoke from the front and side of the house when they arrived.

Liz Weisenbach said she was at work in Spokane at the time of the fire.

Lyon said firefighters quickly got control of the fire, but not before extensive fire, heat and water damage had occurred.

Weisenbach, who told fire crews that she has homeowners insurance, said smoke detectors played a large role in alerting her son and allowed him to evacuate safely. The American Red Cross is providing emergency housing and other needs.
