MOSES LAKE — Knolls Vista Elementary School students wore hats for three days as part of a school-wide fund-raiser.

The students wanted to promote awareness for Haitian families suffering because of the recent earthquake. Students donated $1 for each day they wore a hat.

The “Hats On For Haiti” project helped raise money for Habitat for Humanity International to build homes in Haiti.

Knolls Vista students collected $762 at the end of the three days.

“I am delighted the community and schools and the kids all work together for peoples needs,” Carolyn Grant, habitat president. “Moses Lake does believe and does outreach to those in need.”

Fourth-graders obtained the top grade level donation school-wide with a class total of $130.

“I saw on the news that people and kids were suffering and I wanted to be able to help them,” said fourth-grader Robert Hipolito.

Many other students agreed.

“It wasn’t about wearing the hats, it was about helping people by giving money to build a needed home in Haiti,” said third-grader Taylor Duzon.

Knolls Vista principal Mike Riggs said it is important for students to perform community service projects.

“Providing students the opportunity to learn about sharing and supporting victims of natural disasters such as the earthquake, is an important learning for all,” Riggs said. “The great teachers at Knolls Vista lead their students in awareness of the hurt and loss others suffer during natural disasters.”
