OTHELLO — Othello plans to begin the Main Street rehabilitation project at the end of June.
The city begins accepting bids from contractors on the project June 8.
The projects includes the re-pavement of Main Street along with the installation of new water pipe and storm sewer pipe. The city is also collecting bids for the installation of new traffic signals at several of the intersections and connections for water and electricity for a future beautification project.
According to Gray & Osborne engineers, the project includes 528,000 square feet of grinding and overlay work, 10,000 tons of asphalt, 7,000 feet of water pipe and 9,000 feet of storm sewer pipe.
The project is expected to take about five months to complete, the engineers reported. If the installation of traffic signals is included, it will take an additional two months.
The project is expected to cost about $6.45 million with the installation of the traffic signals and about $5.3 million without them.
The future beautification project using the water and power connections involves planting cherry trees and placing banners along the roadway.
Future meetings with business owners along Main Street are planned to discuss how the construction will affect their business. Council discussed placing signs indicating to customers that the businesses are still open.
