I mentioned in an earlier report that the trout fishing at Curlew Lake is excellent. What I didn't mention is that the largemouth bass fishing here is a blast. Because it doesn't take a lot of time to catch a limit of rainbow here, my wife and I are usually bass fishing by mid-morning. It's a great way to spend the balance of the day on the water. Most of the largemouth are on the smaller side. Most are just half-pounders, but boy are they fun to catch. I have caught bass to about 4 pounds on Curlew, so you never know you might hit a big fish or two during the day. The bass had just started showing up in the shallows when we were there. I had to so some experimenting to find out what they wanted, and what finally worked well was the good old Senko, fished very slowly. A green and yellow worked the first afternoon, but not at all the following morning. I found my trusty smoke blue was what they wanted that day. We fished a large bay in the lower lake that is access through a narrow channel. There are many good bass fishing spots throughout the lake, and that's where you'll find the tiger muskie, too.

One of the most popular events for kids in the region is the annual Kids Fish-In Day at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery. It is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 5th this year. There should be 500 kids and their families at this year's event, and I want to remind everyone that they must pre-register to attend. Registration forms are now available at Hooked on Toys in Wenatchee, and registration forms can be downloaded by going to Events for Kids on my web site, FishingMagician.com. In spite of the many budge cuts with the State of Washington, the Kids Fish-In events will still be held in twelve communities this year, and for the five dollar registration fee, the kids will receive a free t-shirt and a rod and reel combo that they get to keep for future fishing trips. I want also want everyone to know that the t-shirts are being provided by the generous donations made by many sponsors in our local area. You will see these companies and organizations on the entry blanks and t-shirts, and be sure to thank them. Be sure to get your registrations in by the end of the month. I'll see you there!

Here’s some great “feel good” stuff for this report. The second annual Wenatchee River Clean Up, put on by the Chelan County Cascadia Conservation District and Trout Unlimited is coming up on Saturday, August 14th.
