It's final: Republicans conquer Kootenai County

Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 14 years, 2 months AGO
| November 3, 2010 2:14 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — It was a pretty good day to have an “R” after your name.

Republicans ruled across the nation Tuesday, and Democrats in Kootenai County weren’t spared, either.

Longtime County Clerk Dan English fell — heavily — to his Republican opponent, former Post Falls Police Chief Cliff Hayes. Democrat Jody DeLuca Hissong, who has served as deputy coroner for 27 years, was blitzed by Republican Deb Wilkey. Another race that was assured a Republican winner failed to produce the tension some anticipated. Primary County Commission winner Jai Nelson had no trouble defeating fellow Republican and write-in candidate Rick Currie. The other write-in race was also a yawner: state Rep. Phil Hart easily beat fellow Republican Howard Griffiths.

Kootenai County-based Republicans captured every legislative seat, in fact. Just up the interstate from us, even longtime Silver Valley Democrat Mary Lou Shepherd was ousted by her Republican foe, Shannon McMillan.

In two of the most intriguing contests, Christie Wood and Ken Howard defeated Robert Ketchum and Ron Nilson for seats on the North Idaho College Board of Trustees. While Wood and Howard had plenty of support from prominent area Democrats, the election was technically non-partisan.

Republicans scored big downstate, too. Raul Labrador brought an end to Democrat Walt Minnick’s lone term in Congress; incumbent schools boss Tom Luna whipped his challenger, Democrat Stan Olson; and Gov. Butch Otter easily outdistanced his Democratic opponent, Keith Allred.

In Kootenai County, the elections department had its hands full. Because there were so many write-in and absentee ballots to count, the process crawled along at a snail’s pace. At 3:30 a.m. just 45 of the county’s 75 precincts had been counted. By 4:30 a.m., the state’s web site showed 928 of 961 precincts reporting — 18 of the unreported ones belonging to Kootenai County.

But when the final tally was posted — at 5:11 this morning — there was some reason to cheer. The county did not immediately post total voter turnout, but Press calculations showed it just over 60 percent. While unofficial, here are all the final numbers for the Kootenai County 2010 general election:
