PORTLAND - Blake Gal and Anthony Bardaro scored seven seconds apart in the first period, and the Spokane Chiefs went on to beat the Portland Winterhawks 3-1 in Western Hockey League play Sunday night before 5,141 at the Rose Garden.

With Spokane leading 2-1, Levko Koper scored on the power play late in the first period to complete the scoring.

"I thought we played a well-rounded game right from the start," Chiefs coach Don Nachbaur said. "We had a motivated game. For us to rebound like this is outstanding particularly after the game (Saturday) night in Tri-Cities."

It was only the fourth loss in regulation for U.S. Division-leading Portland (19-4-0-1, 39 points). Spokane (11-9-1-1, 24 points) plays host to Kamloops on Wednesday.
