ARLEE — You wouldn’t want to mess with Arlee junior Becca Nelson.
Nelson established her dominance against Noxon last Thursday as the Scarlets picked up the 3-0 win with 25-13, 25-17 and 25-17 scores. She collected eight kills and 22 digs in the match.
“When she’s on, she’s on,” Arlee head coach Brian Big Sam said.
Senior Maria Pablo had eight aces in the match, the team as a whole had 20. Junior setter Courtney Dix had 12 assists.
Then the Scarlets got the battle that everyone in District 10-C has been waiting for. During their own tournament, Arlee went toe-toe with the Charlo Vikings who they will have to contend with mightily if they want to win the conference, and fell 10-15, 15-11 and 10-6.
“We knew it was going to be a battle,” Big Sam said. “We just couldn’t pull it out.”
The low scores that tournaments have make the outcome a little different from what could happen in a full bench.
“It’s really hard to play to 10,” Big Sam said. “When you go to 25, you have a much bigger chance of building.”
Strangely enough, Arlee was victims of its own success.
They lost to Darby and Charlo in the tournament but had a win in two over Seeley. They had 99 total points while Charlo and Lincoln had 101.
Since the seeding was based on points scored, had the Seeley game gone to three games, Arlee would more than likely had more points to advance to the knockout part of the tournament, win or lose.
The Scarlets will play Hot Springs at 5:30 tonight on the road.
