LARAMIE, Wyo. — Ethan Olson assisted on the tying goal, then scored the eventual game winner on a penalty kick in the 87th minute as North Idaho College defeated Laramie County Community College 2-1 on Sunday.

Eli Kesselheim banged in a cross from Olson from 5 yards out in the 66th minute, one minute after LCCC had opened the scoring. Later, Olson was tripped in the box by the keeper as he was cutting in pursuit of a cross from the right side.

“It was a great match, a great team effort. We defended very well and had a great response to their goal,” NIC coach Scott Moorcroft said. “After a tough game yesterday (a 4-1 loss to Iowa Western) and playing at elevation, we were fatigued, but we hunkered down and played our butts off.”

NIC, which had to forfeit a win and a tie from earlier in the season when it was discovered the Cardinals had used an ineligible player, is now 4-7. NIC has added a home game vs. Columbia Basin on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

First half — none. Second half — 1, LCCC, Jorge Arenas (Landon Hart), 64:00. 2, NIC, Eli Kesselheim (Ethan Olson), 65:00. 3, NIC, Olson (penalty kick), 87:00.

Shots on goal — NIC 8, LCCC 11.

Saves — NIC, Alex Olmos 6; LCCC, Colby Keller 4.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Demi Wignot scored the game’s first goal for NIC, but Laramie County scored three second-half goals — two on what NIC coach Dan Hogan described as “rockets.”

“Tough game after yesterday’s battle with Iowa Western (a 3-2 NIC win),” Hogan said.

Hug took a throw-in on the left flank, and crossed the ball into the penalty area for Wignot who deflected the ball past the keeper into the right side of the net.

NIC (7-3-1) plays host to the Gonzaga club team on Saturday.

First half — 1, NIC, Demi Wignot (Melissa Hug), 28:00. Second half — 2, LCCC, Shino Kunisawa (Emi Yamamoto), 53:00. 3, LCCC, Shino Kunisawa (Monica Lubin), 66:00. 4, LCCC, Amanda Halter (Monica Lubin), 85:00.

Shots on goal — NIC 8, LCCC 12.

Rocky Mountain

leads NIC invite

HAYDEN LAKE — The men’s and women’s teams from Rocky Mountain College of Billings, Mont., both lead after the first day of the two-day NIC Invitational at Avondale Golf Club.

Only two men broke par of 72, and only four women shot in the 70s.

“I think Avondale showed its teeth today, with the rough grown up and the fast greens,” NIC coach Derrick Thompson said. “We set the course pretty darn tough. We grew the rough out for a week so it was long and thick, and it was wet today.”

Play concludes today, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
