Rays edge Royals, Boston bests Yankees on final day

Carlos Pena hit a tying, two-run double in the ninth for visiting Tampa Bay off All-Star closer Joakim Soria and the Rays beat Kansas City 3-2 in 12 innings on Sunday.

It was Soria’s first blown save since May 6 and the first runs he had allowed in 24 innings.

Closer Rafael Soriano finished off the Royals for his AL-leading 45th save in 48 chances.

Red Sox 8, Yankees 4: John Lackey (14-11) struck out 10 in 7 2/3 innings in host Boston’s win over New York.

The Red Sox will miss the playoffs for the second time in eight years.

Blue Jays 2, Twins 1: At Minnepolis, Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind added two more home runs to Toronto’s major league-leading total, lifting Toronto over playoff-bound Minnesota in manager Cito Gaston’s last game.

Angels 6, Rangers 2: At Arlington, Texas, Peter Bourjos hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning and Los Angeles beat Texas.

The Angels (80-82) still had their first losing record since 2003 after winning the division five of the previous six seasons.

Tigers 4, Orioles 2: Brandon Inge homered, Johnny Damon singled home the tiebreaking run in the sixth inning and visiting Detroit beat Baltimore to end a six-game skid and avoid a losing season.

White Sox 6, Indians 5: Paul Konerko had two hits in what could be his final game with host Chicago, manager Ozzie Guillen got his 600th win and the White Sox closed out the season by beating Cleveland.

• NATIONAL LEAGUE

Giants 3, Padres 0: Jonathan Sanchez pitched host San Francisco back into the playoffs after a six-year absence and also provided a clutch hit, beating San Diego.

Braves 8, Phillies 7: Tim Hudson and host Atlanta took a six-run lead, then held on to beat Philadelphia.

Atlanta then watched on TV as San Francisco beat San Diego, giving the Braves the NL wild card.

Reds 3, Brewers 2: Jay Bruce hit his fourth homer of host Cincinnati’s title-clinching week, a solo drive off Randy Wolf that broke a 2-all tie in the fourth and the Reds went on to beat Milwaukee.

Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 1: Matt Kemp homered in his fifth consecutive game to lift host Los Angeles over Arizona.

Joe Torre finished with a 2,326-1,997 regular-season record, going 259-227 in three years with the Dodgers.

Nationals 2, Mets 1: Oliver Perez hit Adam Kennedy with a pitch before walking three batters in a row in the 14th and visiting Washington beat New York.

Marlins 5, Pirates 2: At Miami, Dan Uggla homered and drove in three runs, sending Pittsburgh to its 105th defeat.

Astros 4, Cubs 0: Carlos Lee homered and Tommy Manzella drove in two runs and host Houston blanked Chicago.

Cardinals 6, Rockies 1: Jeff Suppan allowed five hits in six scoreless innings and Matt Pagnozzi drove in two runs and host St. Louis beat Colorado.
