MOSES LAKE - It just can't stop, this winning thing.

The Moses Lake Chiefs girls swimming and diving team won its fifth match of the year against one loss as they waved farewell to visiting Southridge in a 109-77 win at their home pool last night.

"Southridge had a few really good swimmers at the top end but we had more depth and came out ahead in the overall results," Moses Lake head coach Tony St. Onge said. "We came out and challenged ourselves to go after Southridge on all three relays because we knew they were in the upper tier of relays in the state. Southridge did win all three relays, but we had season best times."

Despite falling short in the three relays, the Chiefs did their damage in the nine other solo events throughout the day which would be the final home meet for the Moses Lake seniors.

Southridge won eight of 12 events but the Chiefs depth allowed for 25 top three finishes compared to only 11 for the visiting Suns squad.

"We moved ahead of Southridge in the distance events with big 1-2-3 finishes," St. Onge said.

Kelly Garrett took home the win in the 200-yard freestyle (2:14.34) while the Chiefs swept the top three places in the event as she was followed by Abby Johnston (2:20.78) and Brianne Pauley (2:24.02).

Junior Courtney Schwiesow anchored another sweep in the 200-yard individual medley with her winning time of 2:21.46 as Chiefs Grace Hochstatter (2:38.05) and Hayley Nye (2:40.74) finished 2-3 respectively.

In the 1-meter diving event, Sammi Hendrickson of Moses Lake took first with a score of 170.20.6, just ahead of teammate Hailey Garza's 163.35.4.

Amber (5:49.40.6) and Kelly Garrett (6:00.43) finished 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle while Johnston (6:19.23) helped complete another top-three sweep for the Chiefs.

When the night was over, St. Onge reflected on an evening that "mostly belonged to the seniors."

"All six of the senior captains did a great job leading the Chiefs to this home victory," St. Onge said. "The group of Taylor Ballard, Elaura Grant, Sydnee Jones, Alex Hammond, Brianne Pauley and Megan Pyle have done a great job all four years of their high school swimming careers and have contributed competitively as well as building team character. We as coaches applaud their efforts and the way they have represented the Moses Lake Community."

Now with the post season on the horizon, the Chiefs look to keep their season-long momentum working to their advantage.

"Our goal will be to get one really good week of training in this week so we are ready for the championship phase of the season," St. Onge said.
