Critchfield takes stand in defense

COEUR d'ALENE - Facing the possibility of spending up to life in prison if found guilty of one or more of the felony charges against him, Robert "Bob" Critchfield testified on his own behalf Tuesday.
Critchfield, 35, denied "absolutely" all of the accusations made by nine minor females who testified against him during his trial in Kootenai County District Court. The trial enters its seventh day today.
He told the jury he's "100 percent" certain the girls all lied about him touching their still developing bodies, exposing himself to them, and showing them pornography. The jury will likely begin deliberations late today or early Thursday, and will have to make the call in the entirely he-said-she-said-based case.
Critchfield described the scene at his Coeur d'Alene Place home in 2007 and 2008 as one where kids visited constantly and caused trouble while he studied to become a registered nurse. He was arrested in June 2008, just about the time he was accepted into a college nursing program, he said.
He liked that the neighborhood kids were coming over to entertain his kids - a son and daughter who are ages 9 and 14 today, he said. Also, like his wife, Angie Critchfield, testified, he said he felt sorry for many of the neighborhood kids who didn't have parents home most of the time. His home was a great place to hang out for neighborhood kids, with a swimming pool, trampoline and video games, according to testimony.
Bob Critchfield said the girls "talked about sexual things" frequently at the house despite his warnings not to do so, they found and played a VHS pornography video he and his wife stashed in their bedroom and labeled "What About Bob?" and "Pretty Woman," logged on to porno videos on his bedroom computer, and placed a sexually obscene picture onto the desktop background of his computer.
He said some of the girls flashed their breasts out his windows, pulled down his pants multiple times, would jump on his back, punch and kick him, lock him and his family out of his house and different rooms inside, found pictures of him and his wife engaged in sex acts, stole cigarettes, accused him of being "a dirty old man" and caused other problems in and around his home.
He said he would kick the girls out of his house, but eventually would let them back in later. The defense has sought to show through testimony that the girls accused Critchfield of the alleged acts to get back at him for taking a stand against them when they acted up.
Prosecutors questioned his characterization of himself as a nice, tolerant guy who was pushed around repeatedly by several wild and vindictive girls.
Kootenai County Deputy Prosecutor Marty Raap asked Critchfield, "So in a year and a half, you couldn't figure out a way to keep these prepubescent girls from torturing you in your own house?"
Angie Critchfield's testimony appeared to be consistent with her husband's.
She said some girls would come by the house after Bob Critchfield was arrested and taunt her. They would also come by her work for the same reason, she said.
"It looked to me like they were just gloating," Angie Critchfield told the jury.
She testified that she never saw her husband do anything to the girls that concerned her or was inappropriate. She has been at the trial daily, supporting her husband of 14 years. The couple met 18 years ago while working together at a fast-food restaurant, she said.
She said the family had to sell the Coeur d'Alene Place home because Bob Critchfield could no longer be there following a court order. He also lost his part-time package delivery job, and the family needed the money to pay for his criminal defense. Bob Critchfield said he's now living in Post Falls.
The prosecution is expected to call some brief rebuttal witnesses today at the Kootenai County Courthouse, followed by closing arguments.
Critchfield is charged with multiple felony counts of lewd conduct with a minor and sexual abuse of a child.
With each count of lewd conduct, he is facing a sentence of up to life imprisonment if found guilty. Each sexual abuse count carries a sentence of up to 25 years in prison.
