QUINCY - A Moses Lake woman was reportedly walking on state Route 28 Wednesday morning when she was fatally struck by a car.

Melissa L. Mulliner, 40, Moses Lake, was allegedly walking westbound on state Route 28 when she was reportedly hit by a 2006 Ford Focus heading the same direction.

The driver was Pamela A. Dorris, 50, Soap Lake, according to Washington State Patrol.

Dorris reportedly stopped and got out of her vehicle after she heard a bump, said Trooper Rich Magnussen.

"The driver did the right thing in this situation; she stopped and stayed by the area," he said.

State patrol detectives believe Mulliner may have been hit by another car prior to being struck by the Ford Focus.

The fatality occurred three miles east of Quincy.

"The area where it happened is rural and it is not well lit. It was really dark at the time of the collision," said Magnussen.

Detectives are trying figure out why Mulliner was on the highway.

"We don't know how she ended up on the road way. We are still trying to figure out a lot of the basic details," he said.

Mulliner was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy performed on Mulliner revealed the cause of death as blunt impact injuries from the fatality, said Grant County coroner Dave Matney.

The fatality closed both lanes on SR 28 for about 10 hours, said Magnussen.
