Candidates for the post of Sanders County Commissioner met Thursday evening on Oct. 14. Democratic candidate Nancy Beech and write-in candidate Ron Olfert fielded questions on various issues. Republican candidate Glen Magera was not present at the event.

The forum was initially intended to be divided between candidates for commissioner and candidates for sheriff. However, due to a recent personal tragedy for one of the candidates for sheriff, that section of the forums has been postponed.

Tom Eggensperger of Thompson falls was invited to moderate the event, and was responsible for presenting the candidates with their questions as well as keeping candidates responses to a strict time limit.

Candidates were first asked why they are running for county commissioner. For Beech, confidence has been key.

“I feel like I know what I am doing,” Beech said.

Olfert also expressed faith in his ability to fulfill the duties of the position.

“I think I can make a difference,” Olfert said.

Candidates went on to field several questions, all pertaining to a wide variety of issues. Some questions were specific, such as where the candidates stood on the proposed Rock Creek Mine. Others were more general such as how candidates would foster job growth in the county.

When asked what the future holds for Sanders County, both candidates responded optimistically. Beech cited timber as a renewable resource, and one that would support and sustain industry in the county well into the future. She also saw a climate where agriculture and outdoor industries and outfitting continue to thrive. Beech also predicted an expansion in cottage industries, which are small businesses frequently operated from peoples’ homes, and aren’t immediately visible to the community as most storefronts are.

Olfert hoped that the county could hang on to freedoms and work to become great again.
