POLSON - There was an extra surprise for Olympic hopeful Melinda Owen after the Live Locally 5K Run on Saturday. That surprise was a $10,000 check from Country Pasta owners Amy and Fred Kellogg to help her carry out her dreams. The race also earned $4,250 in proceeds for Owen.

"It's so neat that so many people car about what I'm doing," Owen said.

The former Polson pole-vaulter has gone far, from Flathead Lake to the University of Idaho to competing on an international stage.

"We're just one of the many individuals and businesses that has supported Melinda," Amy Kellogg said.

With no income and expenses from travel and general living expenses, Owen has had to tough it out and said she has been so blessed with the generous donations from people in Polson.

"The peace of mind that it will give me is great," Owen said. "I'm such a worry-wart I was constantly fretting about everything."

Owen trains down in the Olympic Training Center down in San Diego where she gets room and board in the dorms and meal.

Owen has been back for about a month, training with University of Montana coaches but is also finding time to help out with a Special Olympics team in Missoula and speak to students at Linderman Elementary. She'll be headed back to San Diego this week where she'll start training for the indoor track season and the world championships next year.

There will be plenty of people rooting her on as the turnout for the Live Locally 5K run saw 231 registered runners and 191 people actually run the race that will have all it's proceeds benefit Owen.

"That's the most ever that we've had," event co-organizer Heather Knutson said of the turnout for the run, which is its fourth year. "There were several people that just wanted to sign up and pay the registration to help Melinda."

The previous three years, the proceeds of the Live Lovally run went to the Mission Valley Aquatics Center.

"We kind of look at the community and see where the need is," Knutson.
