Currie refunds contribution

Commissioner Rick Currie had to provide a refund this week after receiving a contribution from a political action committee with expired registration.
Currie, running as a write-in candidate to keep his district 2 seat, said he would provide a hand-written check today to Citizens for Positive Change, totaling the full $1,000 the Coeur d'Alene group had given to his general election campaign.
"It was donated in good faith and received in good faith," Currie said on Thursday. "When we figured out it didn't meet the requirements, both sides said 'Not a problem,' and we're sending it back and they will accept it."
The amount donated after the primary elections violates Idaho code because the PAC's registration had expired a few years ago, Currie said.
According to County Clerk Dan English, a PAC must be registered with either the county Clerk's Office or the Secretary of State to donate more than $500 to a local candidate.
"My understanding is that (the state) is where they were filed before," English said.
Currie said he was tipped off about the invalid nature of the contribution on Wednesday night, and confirmed with the group the next day that its paperwork had expired.
"As soon as I found out, I immediately called my treasurer and had him write a check," Currie said.
English added that the Secretary of State's office also notified him that someone had filed a complaint this week about the group's status.
Citizens for Positive Change could not be reached on Thursday evening.
English said he will be contacting the PAC about renewing the registration.
"It looks like once we became aware, he (Currie) is doing what he should be doing on that, and we will follow that up with a letter to that committee," he said.
