COEUR d'ALENE - The graveyard is spooky.

So is the big inflatable cat, the demented playground, and the skeleton on the park bench.

The creepiest attraction, though, is the witch's house - a tiny shed, full of talismans and voodoo, where the warty denizen cooks her potions and stirs her cauldron.

Leslie Bise spent a lot of time on that little house. The 50-year-old also strung lights, hung skeletons and built eerie props, transforming her home at Coeur d'Alene Place (5764 Loraine Street) into a real Halloween nightmare.

"This is the first time it's been set up like this," Bise said. "It just keeps getting bigger and better."

Outlined in bright lights, an 8-foot pumpkin hangs off the garage. A big hairy spider dangles from the porch, and the Grim Reaper welcomes visitors to the haunted backyard. Gravestones line the walkway.

This Halloween, Bise rigged up interactive displays that activate when kids walk past. Between all the goblins, ghosts and ghouls, she spent $1,000 on her decorations this year.

It's all about the children, she said, the trick-or-treaters and passersby who stop to enjoy her displays.

"I love kids," Bise said. "I hand out popsicles all summer, and I hand out toys at Halloween. The kids come back over and over all night."

Bise and her husband, Rick, will both be in costume on Sunday, of course. Rick plans to dress as a scary clown (a Halloween classic), while Leslie dons the outfit of a court jester. The couple expect quite a few kids that night.

"It kind of depends what day Halloween falls on," Bise said. "We've had in excess of 200 kids several years."

The youngsters will be treated to a scary evening. Bise's haunted house will even feature a light show and a killer soundtrack.

"It's always growing every year," Bise said. "I've already got all my surprises planned for next year. Gotta keep Halloween alive, right?"
