POST FALLS - One of two people found shot dead Thursday inside their Post Falls home was involved in a shooting incident at a North Idaho smoke shop nearly five years earlier, law enforcement officials said Friday.

The man, identified as Jeff A. Hayes, 54, shot and killed an alleged robber of the shop near the Idaho-Washington border in December 2005.

Investigators on Friday concluded the deaths of the two people to be a murder-suicide, and it appears to be a case of domestic violence, police said. It doesn't appear anyone else was involved.

Hayes and a woman, Christina K. Mandriguez, 38, were found inside their home at 509 E. 11th Ave.

Post Falls Police Chief Scot Haug said the department believes it has determined the sequence of the two deaths, but police won't release that information until all the facts are in.

He said investigators are estimating that the couple died roughly 10 or so days ago.

Autopsies were conducted on the two bodies in Spokane on Friday, he said. They both had fatal gunshot wounds to the head.

On Dec. 26, 2005, Hayes was working as a clerk at a smoke shop on Seltice Way when he shot and killed Joseph Kalani Hatchie III, 47. Kootenai County Sheriff's Department spokesman Maj. Ben Wolfinger confirmed that Hayes was the clerk in that shooting incident.

The Press reported at the time of that shooting that Hatchie was wearing a ski mask when he entered Lew's Smoke Shop, grabbed Hayes, pointed a pistol at him and demanded money.

Hayes reached under the counter and brought up a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol and shot Hatchie 10 times. Hatchie's gun turned out to be a pellet gun, though it resembled a Walther P-9 semiautomatic. The popular shop had been hit by robbers previously, and Hayes was not charged in the shooting.

Hatchie, of Otis Orchards, Wash., had four sons and three daughters, according to his obituary.

Haug said Hayes, who had no children, grew up in the North Idaho area. Mandriguez, who has a daughter, has family in the Yakima area, he said. Hayes and Mandriguez had been in a long-term relationship for about 15 to 20 years, but were not married, he said.

Haug said police have responded to the home in the past because of disputes between them, though no one was arrested in those instances. Mandriguez was cited for drug offenses.

To determine the order of the deaths, police investigators have been examining the placement of the shots, presence of gun-shot residue, the expended cartridges, and posture of the bodies. Only two shots appear to have been fired, Haug said.

They are also looking closely at the proximity of the gun to the bodies. Haug said the weapon, a Glock 9 mm handgun, was between the bodies, which were only feet apart.

Haug said investigators determined she was likely holding a cell phone when she died. Two phones were collected from the home and a forensic analysis of both will be conducted, he said.

The landlord of the residence Hayes and Mandriguez were occupying was at the home Thursday and was proceeding with an eviction. He called 911 after he attempted to enter the home and found her body against the door inside.

When Post Falls Police officers arrived, Hayes was found with Mandriguez.

Haug had said Hayes had been laid off about a year ago.

Mandriguez was employed at Goodwill in Post Falls for more than a year, through April 2009, said the nonprofit's spokeswoman, Diane Galloway.

The North Idaho Violence Prevention Center offers free, confidential services to victims of violence, said an organization representative Friday.

It has a 24-hour crisis line at (208) 664-1443.
