Coeur d'Alene Sting under-12 girls (Walker): The Sting placed second in the Silver Challenge Division at the Northwest Cup in Spokane Valley Aug 13-15.

The Sting lost two close games, 3-1 and 1-0 to the Spokane Shadow Breakers and Boise's FC Nova. The Sting beat 3 Rivers (Tri-Cities) 4-0 and the Shadow Breakers 2-0.

The championship game against the Spokane Elite ended in a 0-0 tie after regulation and overtime, with the Sting losing 3-1 on penalty kicks.

Sting U14 girls (Williamson): The Sting made it to the semifinals in the Northwest Cup in Spokane Valley Aug. 13-15.

The Sting beat the Spokane Elite (Philp) 2-1 with goals from Sarah Hamen and Erin Ogram, and seven saves from goalie Charley Smith. The Sting beat the Spokane Sabers 1-0, as Aubrey Manteuffel scored and Smith earned the shutout in goal.

The Sting played the Columbia Basin FC United to a scoreless tie, as Smith had seven saves. In the semifinals, the Sting lost 4-0 to SSC Elite 96 Strasser/Jasso Red.

Sting U13 girls gold: The Sting went undefeated in the opening weekend of the Far West Regional League.

They beat Pacific Ice FC 97 (Vancouver, Wash.) 3-0. Isabella Scott scored two goals and Cydney Roop scored once. Sydney Quimby and Nicole Mitten each had an assist, and goalkeeper Julia Roach had five saves.

The Sting then beat Cascade FC Fusion (Salem, Ore.) 3-0. Halle Eborall scored the first goal and Sydney Quimby scored the last two. Julia Roach and Sam Lane combined for the shutout.

In the third game, the Sting defeated Oregon Rush 97 G Nike (Bend, Ore.) 2-0. Cameron Croghan and Caitlin Barber each had a goal, with Josee Bassett getting the lone assist. Keeper Julia Roach recorded the shutout.

Sting U14 girls gold (Swoboda): The Sting began the Far West Regional League with a 3-0 start.

The Sting beat Montana United 6-1. Alissa Jolliff had three goals and an assist, Maddison Ward scored two goals, Rebekah Brendis one, Natalie Wheelock had two assists and Tiegan Horton had seven saves.

The Sting beat the Rogue Valley SC Black Hawks (Oregon) 3-0. Maddison Ward scored two goals, Alissa Jolliff one, Natalie Wheelock had one assist and Tiegan Horton had seven saves in the shutout.

The Sting beat Oregon Rush 96 1-0. Megan Lowery scored on a direct kick from 24 yards out, and Tiegan Horton posted the shutout in goal with six saves.

Idaho Thunder U11 boys: The Thunder placed second in the U12-13 gold division at the River City Challenge in Spokane.

The Thunder opened pool play Saturday morning with a 4-3 loss to the U13 Spokane Sabers. Caleb McCluskie had two goals and Braeden Gelnette scored one in the loss. In their next match they tied a U12 Spokane Shadow team 2-2. Goals were provided by Nick Morris and Braeden Gelnette.

Sunday morning in the semifinals the Thunder played the same U12 Spokane Shadow team and won 2-0. Chase Cripps scored both goals, and Kyle Sanchez notched the shutout in the goal.

The Thunder lost 4-0 in the championship game to the U12 Sandpoint Strikers.

The Thunder boys' next action will be at the Pend Oreille Cup in a couple of weeks.

SWIMMING

CAST at zones: Six members of the Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team competed in the 2010 Western Zone Championship Aug. 10-14 in San Jose, Calif. The Western Zone meet is an All-Star swimming championship, with swimmers representing their local section of the entire western United States. The six CAST swimmers were members of the Inland Empire Zone Team, a team representing the Inland Northwest.

The Inland Empire Team equaled its highest placing ever with a fifth-place finish.

Key to the team's success came from CAST swimmers Yunus Tezcan (16), Patrick Loftus (16, and co-captain of zone team), and Joseph Loftus (15) who contributed to a sweep of the male 15-16 year-old relay events.

Individual highlights included wins by Bryce Kananowicz in the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes, and 200- and 400-yard individual medleys, and Joseph Loftus in the 200 IM. Patrick Loftus' highest individual effort was a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke. Anna de Tar (15) finished seventh in the 200 freestyle. Nicole Rozier (12) achieved personal bests in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle. Tezcan swam to an individual personal best in the 50 freestyle.

CAST at open water meet: The Coeur d'Alene Area Swim team hosted the first CAST Classic, an open water swim meet on Aug. 14 at Lake Coeur d'Alene. Coeur d'Alene's first open water 2.5-, 5- and 10-kilometer swim meet attracted 71 participants.

Different CAST swimmers swam every distance offered and Dirk Seymour, 14, took top honors with a time of 2 hours, 39 minutes, 41 seconds for the 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) distance.

Other CAST swimmers who participated in the meet included Kjirsten Magnuson, who took top honors at the 5K women's distance (3.1 miles) with a time of 1:12.01. Kjirsten battled head to head the whole way with another CAST swimmer, Peyton Bowen, who ended up in second just three seconds behind with a time of 1.12.04.36. Other CAST finishers at this distance included Rachel Peterson (1.17.58.00), in third and Maddy Barrett (1.22.49.0) in fourth.

At the 2.5-kilometer distance (just over 1 1/2 miles) Kyle Jones won it in 38:19.0. He was followed by teammates Ryan Swayze in second in 38.35.89 and Kade Hearn in third in 41.22.31.

On the women's side in the 2.5K race was Sidney Orr in first in 39.53, Suzanne de Tar in second place in 41.13.66 and Maggie de Tar in third in 42.17.40.

JV SOCCER

Lake City boys 2, Moscow 2: Nick Deming tied the game at 1 early in the second half for Lake City in its season opener. Moscow took a 2-1 lead, then Kyle Lambert scored on an assist from Isaac Cunnington to tie the game.

Dylan Shapland had 10 saves for Lake City, which had 11 shots on goal.

Lake City 4, Priest River 0: Against the Spartan varsity, Kenny Randel opened the scoring on an assist from Austin Maldonado. Darian Burns scored on an assit from Cunnington to end the first half with a 2-0 lead for the Timberwolves, who outshot the Spartans 20-2 in the half.

Cody Hocking added an unassisted goal, and Brian Evan scored from Gavin Burbine in the second half.

Shapland made nine saves in the shutout. Lake City finished with 33 shots on goal.
