Polson boys’ and girls’ teams learn from first games of the

season

POLSON - What a difference a game makes as the Polson Pirates suffered a 5-0 loss to Hamilton on Aug. 30 and then knocked around Corvallis 7-0 last Friday at home.

"In a 7-0 win it goes as good as you want it to go," Polson head coach Michael Hewston said.

After being held to five shots on goal against Hamilton, the Pirates exploded for the 43-shot performance against Corvallis.

Senior goalkeeper Jacie Morrison was key with seven saves.

"When we watched the film [of the Hamilton game], we were able to point out the irregularities," Hewston said.

In the Corvallis game, senior Brynn Rowley had two goals in the first half.

Senior Sarah Devlin also scored two goals in the game. Senior Jordan Hinshaw, junior Madeline Hewston and senior Laura Rost all had a goal and an assist in the game.

Reegan von Wildenradt was key on offense, dishing out three different assists including a one-touch goal by Rost.

The Lady Pirates will play on the road at 4 p.m. on Friday at Belgrade and at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Livingston.

Boys' soccer

POLSON - Polson Pirates head coach Jess Kittle asked his team if they were tired after their first game of the season last Tuesday. While a few players raised their hands, they all said they felt they were in good enough shape to keep playing.

In the game, only 14 players saw the pitch, meaning that only three subs occurred.

"That told me that they're in condition," Kittle said. "They're really getting into game shape."

While the team lost to Stillwater Christian in their season opener 2-0, the attitude and physical fitness of the team are strong plus signs for the Pirates.

"We definitely don't want to take a loss but I don't think a blowout in our favor would have helped us at all," Kittle said. "It's good to have a game with them so early in the season. That was our first game and it was Stillwater's third game of the season."

Kittle said that Stillwater was really able to attack the goal and was usually in the right place at the right time.

"We'd have some good looks and then we would put the ball in the goalkeeper's breadbasket," Kittle said.

The team was disappointed with their passing, something they take pride in and their performance as a whole.

"They know they can play better, I know they can play better," Kittle said. "They want to prove it to the people that are watching,"

The boys' team will play two road games, one against Belgrade at 6 p.m. on Friday and then the other against Park at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
