POST FALLS - Tuesday's match between the Coeur d'Alene Vikings and Post Falls Trojans wasn't about winning and losing on the volleyball court.

In the fourth annual "Volleyball for a Cure" match, Post Falls defeated Coeur d'Alene 26-24, 25-11, 21-25, 25-21 in a 5A Inland Empire League match at the Arena, with proceeds going toward the Susan B. Komen and Kootenai Health Support fund for breast cancer awareness.

"This is a big community service project for us," Post Falls coach Willow Hanna said. "It works for something that we can help benefit the local area and tie it in with the match. It's an important event for us. It's a fun match between us and Coeur d'Alene. I think our camaraderie between the two schools is what makes it fun."

The schools had raised over $3,000 before the start of the varsity match among raffles and other drawings.

Before the match, Hanna was introduced along with her former Post Falls Junior High teacher Jeanie Wilhelm, who is a cancer survivor.

"It was great for her to be here with us tonight," Hanna said. "It was really fun to have her be a part of this."

The schools also donated some funds to Donna Pottenger, mother of Post Falls assistant coach Dee Pottenger, who is currently undergoing a third round of chemotherapy.

"It's just something that we like to do to try and help," Hanna said. "We wanted to do something, so we raised some cash and got her a gas card to try to offset some of the travel costs to Spokane."

Coeur d'Alene coach Carly Curtis said that in the event's fourth year, it continues to grow.

"We've just continued to see the support grow and grow," Curtis said. "There are more and more sponsors each year that want to get involved. This has really touched home for a lot of those people that came here tonight. We just enjoy doing something to give something back to the community."

Jibby had eight kills and three aces, Tori Bertsch had 18 assists and 13 digs, Allison Meehan had eight kills and Sierra Monti had four blocks for Post Falls (16-1, 3-0 5A IEL), which hosts Sandpoint on Tuesday.

Kylie Curtis had eight kills, Ashley Hammons had 16 assists, Amy Norris had 17 digs and Maddy Seaman and McKinna Seaman had three aces apiece and Kayla McGlathery had two blocks for Coeur d'Alene (7-9, 0-2), which travels to Lewiston on Thursday.
