OTHELLO - Veronica Gonzalez shows appreciation of her longtime friend by displaying her handmade tablecloths, pillowcases, centerpieces and afghans at the Adams County Fair.
Gonzalez, of Othello, said she was given the items by her friend and former co-worker, Mary Jane Coulter, also of Othello.
The women worked as school bus drivers together for many years and developed a ?friendship.
"We became super close friends, so yeah, we're close," Gonzalez said.
Coulter retired from the Othello School District after 35 years and Gonzalez is still working.
The two women remain friends.
One day, they were going through two chests full of old items at Coulter's Othello home.
The chests were full of needlepoint projects completed by Coulter, her mother and grandmother.
Gonzalez was told by her friend to take what she wanted.
She did and later decided to display the items at the Adams County Fair this week to tie into the event's "Remember When" theme.
The wooden chest holding the items belongs to Trudy Worsham of Othello.
Quilts are also displayed near the cedar chest display, with one quilt made by Gonzalez.
She received a blue ribbon for her quilt.
One side shows pieces of her husband's work jeans and the other side is covered with a warm, dark blue fleece.
Gonzalez also has a old clothing iron displayed, which belongs to her father-in-law.
She's not sure how old the iron is, but knows coal was used to heat the pre-electric device.
