Charlo improves to 6-0

PHILIPSBURG - Sometimes it's all about the little things. The Charlo Lady Vikings (6-0 overall, 3-0 conf.) needed to win a fifth game for the match win against Philipsburg and got some much needed help from Lady Luck.

"We ended up with the serve and the side of the court we wanted," Charlo head coach Sheryl Kain said. "It's kind of a mental thing."

Charlo would end up winning 3-2 with 13-25, 26-24, 25-18, 14-25 and 15-8 scores.

"It turned out to be two good things [the serve and the side of the court]," Kain said. "It's a mind game. It's like your lucky game socks. It's pretty stupid but it really works."

What also worked for Charlo was junior Kinley Pope who scored 12 kills and sophomore Rachel Hoyt, who had six blocks on the night. Junior Dawn Blevins provided support for the Lady Vikings on defense and offense, collecting 17 digs and 21 assists.

Charlo also picked up the 3-0 District 10-C win last Thursday when they defeated Two Eagle River 25-2, 25-3, 25-9 in a battle for Lake County bragging rights.

The Lady Vikings had 37 aces and sophomore Rachel Hoyt led the team with seven kills. Junior Dawn Blevins was impressive from behind the line with 11 aces and then aided her team with 11 assists. For Two Eagle River, junior Tiana Piapot had two kills and McKendra Mock had three digs.

"We are pretty young, we're not quite there yet," Kain said. "This is a whole new group of girls. "Arlee will give us a run, they always get ready for us."

Charlo will play St. Regis at 7 p.m. tonight at home. Then they will play in the Arlee volleyball tournament on Saturday.

Pirates remain undefeated

ANACONDA - When senior wide receiver Kyle Bagnell was marked in coverage by Anaconda last Friday night, Polson found another weapon.

Senior receiver Louis Mohr scorched them for six receptions, 139 yards and one touchdown in a 41-0 Pirates (4-0) victory.

"He had a big game for us," Polson head coach Scott Wilson said.

Anaconda had man-on-man coverage and then had a safety on Bagnell.

"It opened some one-on-one opportunities for Lewis," Wilson said.

After junior running back Chris Cote scored a touchdown on a 15-yard run in the first quarter, Mohr caught a 27-yard pass from junior quarterback Vince DiGiallonardo for a score that sparked a 21-point second quarter.

"Hopefully we can slowly get a couple more [wide receivers] involved," Wilson said.

The defense didn't leave anything to question as senior lineman Zion Lee stepped up with three sacks and junior Josh Clairmont was solid on defense, Wilson said. The Pirates gave up just 70 yards on the ground and 96 through the air. Polson has a bye week this Friday, allowing Wilson to sharpen up his team for the rest of the season. He said that going into this game he wanted to minimize the turnovers and mistakes.

"This week and the bye week we're going to try and improve and work on some technique things," Wilson said.

Bulldogs post

14-point comeback

DEER LODGE - Sometimes being a ball hog in sports is a good thing.

Just ask the Mission Bulldogs (2-1) who held onto the football for 19 minutes in the first half of their 28-14 win over Deer Lodge last Friday on the road.

"We kept their offense off the field," Mission coach Peter Hamilton said.

A majority of Deer Lodge's 246 yards on offense came on scoring plays. A 36-yard pass in the first and a 58-yard run in the third quarter put Mission in a 13-0 hole. Then the Bulldogs woke up. Junior back Austin Durglo connected with sophomore back Dylan Evans for a touchdown pass to put the Bulldogs on the board. Evans would score again with a 10-yard run that made it 14-13.

Senior running back Chris McKay took the lead for Mission with a four-yard run for the 21-14 lead with four minutes to go in the game. Durglo had a 37-yard touchdown run in the fourth to ice the game.

"I thought we played well in the second half," Hamilton said. "The kids responded well with being down in the first half."

Mission will host Thompson Falls at 7 p.m. this Friday to cap off their homecoming week.
