EPHRATA - Bail was set at $1 million for Mark L. Benson after the charge of attempted murder was filed in Grant County Superior Court.

Bail was set for the 55-year-old Moses Lake man by Judge John Knodell.

Investigators reported the victim, Susan Benson, 55, Moses Lake, was working at Pioneer Memorial Gardens when she encountered her husband, Mark Benson, while leaving a bathroom.

She got into her car and began driving away when she stopped to find what Mark Benson wanted, according to court records.

Mark Benson reportedly asked her if they could reconcile rather than continue with a divorce. She told investigators she refused and began to drive away when Mark Benson allegedly pulled a .32 caliber pistol and fired several times at her.

Five or six shots struck the car door and one entered Susan Benson's left shoulder, according to court documents.

She called 9-1-1 while driving toward Samaritan Hospital, according to the police report.

Mark Benson contacted 9-1-1 roughly an hour after the shooting, reportedly telling the dispatcher he heard about the shooting and wanted to know about his wife's condition, according to court records.

Police set up a meeting and arrested him. Mark Benson allegedly continued asking about his wife when he met with police.
