GUNS: An armed person can help

Mr. Green, bad guys do shoot first, BUT in an armed society they don't really know who else may have a gun. That other person may be able to prevent a second shot or second person from being hit. Knowledge that others may probably be armed can prevent a shooting from occurring at all. I should know who said this, but memory fails me at the moment: "An armed society is a polite society."

Armed officers are ambushed, typically when they are alone, not when there are others around them that are possibly armed. The Seattle shooting some time back was an anomaly and did involve multiple officers. If another citizen had been armed, some deaths may have been avoided. At least their chances of survival would have been increased. And sometimes nothing will make a difference.

The 21 year age limit to purchase a gun has no effect on persons who steal them. That comment is not applicable to allowing guns on campus.

I agree we shouldn't abandon all controls. I would prefer guns be carried concealed, and each such person required to take a gun safety course AND training similar to what is now required for a CC permit. Actual shooting practice should also be required. As for the rest, we already have laws in place, they need to be further enforced with more consistent (and in some cases more severe) punishment.

Mr. Ruskovich, you seem to believe that as soon as anyone gets a gun in their hand they will go on a killing spree. I'm sure the general population is saner than that. While there are nuts out there, they will be out there regardless. Refer to the quote noted earlier.

You don't think colleges are dangerous places now? Then why any form of campus security? They can't be everywhere at all times, but the "bad guys" can't know who else may be nearby ready to help anyone in need. I'll not comment on the rest of your letter, it's more of the same reasoning throughout.

I won't be able to change your two minds, perhaps I can give others something to consider.
