Book Sale features rare editions

Rare editions will be up for grabs at bargain-basement prices at the Friends of the Community Library Network at Hayden's Spring Book Sale, Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale will take place at the library, 8385 Government Way.

"The Compleat[sic] Angler," "The Expedition of Humphry Clinker," "Patents for Inventions" and the Ralph W. Emerson's leather-bound, six-volume set are examples of titles available.

All the collector's books are priced at least 50 percent less than comparable books on the Internet said Carolyn Cozzetto, Friends of the Library volunteer.

People coming to the sale will also find a large selection of new young adult paperbacks, fiction and non-fiction books, children's books, sheet music, DVDs, CDs and more.

The Friends of the Library host the biannual sale and every penny from the sale goes back to the library, Cozzetto said. The funds raised make free programs available at all the libraries in the Community Library Network including Athol, Harrison, Hayden, Pinehurst, Post Falls, Rathdrum, Spirit Lake and the mobile library.

Plot owners asked to remove items

POST FALLS - The city of Post Falls is asking Evergreen Cemetery plot owners to remove Christmas, Easter and other seasonal decorations or personal items from the cemetery by the second week of May when staff will begin preparing for Memorial Day events.

Decorations that meet the cemetery rules and regulations will be left in place until they become unsightly. Decorations, temporary displays and any items that do not conform to cemetery regulations, or which may constitute a problem during summer maintenance will be removed.

Removed items will be discarded in accordance with the rules and regulations. Cemetery rules and regulations are available at www.postfallsidaho.org under the Parks and Recreation Department.

Lot owners are asked to obtain approval from the Cemetery Division before installing fixed decorations to ensure they will not be removed. Evergreen Cemetery also sells decorations that comply with the rules.

Malzahn: Treasurer office OK

The Treasurer's Office knows how to handle dollars.

Kootenai County Treasurer Tom Malzahn said on Friday that while he supports the cash management improvements that Clerk Cliff Hayes has instituted in some county departments, no changes were necessary at the Treasurer's Department.

A recent review of money-handling procedures at the county by Jim Simmerman, former bank auditor and retired captain of the Post Falls Police Department, found that the Treasurer's Department is performing well in that regard, he added.

"The cash handling procedures in the Treasurer's Office have been scrutinized, and there are no cash handling issues," Malzahn said. "We have had and continue to have separation of responsibilities that ensures adequate cash handling."

Clerk Hayes could not be reached for comment on Friday.

County mulls ditching chapel

SANDPOINT - Bonner County is considering extracting itself from a lease/purchase agreement for the former Calvary Chapel, a building that has largely stood dormant for nearly two years.

The county began financing the purchase of the building through the Panhandle Area Council in 2009. It was intended to serve as station for Bonner County EMS, but EMS had no interest in the facility and ultimately set up shop in the former Big Sky Paramedics building across from Bonner General Hospital.

The county had been spending up to $1,600 a month just to heat the building during winter months.
