Evelyn A. Shaffer, 83

Evelyn A. Shaffer, age 83, passed away in Spokane on March 22, 2011.

Evelyn was born in Westwood, Calif., on Aug. 1, 1927, to Mathias and Alta (Metcalf) Quint. Her mother later married Jack Martin, whom Evelyn considered her father.

Evelyn married Lester Newell on Jan. 31, 1943. Lester was a member of the U.S. Army serving in Italy where he was killed in action Sept. 24, 1944. He lost his life two months before his son Kenneth was born. She later married Donald Shaffer on August 31, 1968, in Coeur d'Alene.

She worked for General Telephone in Coeur d'Alene from 1944 to 1987. Evelyn resided with her son and daughter-in-law in Spokane for four years and the last three years at the Rockwood retirement community in Spokane.

She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Coeur d'Alene.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Kenneth Newell, and his wife, Cindy, of Spokane. Grandchildren include Michelle Cravens (Newell), of Spokane; Ian Newell and wife Paula, of Spokane; Brandy Ware, of Coeur d'Alene; and Angelo Durazo, of Spokane. She had five great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her first husband Lester; second husband Donald, Feb. 17, 1987; daughter Jo "Georgia" Marian; Sister Virginia Howard; and one grandson, Marty.

At Evelyn's request no local service will be held. A scattering service will take place in Italy at a later date. English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, is in charge of the arrangements.
