RONAN - The Mission boys' tennis team got their season kick-started with a 6-0 victory over Class A Ronan on Tuesday behind great performances by Spencer Ahlborn and Kyle Schock.

"I was pleased with their performance because it wasn't the best weather conditions to be playing," Mission boys' tennis head coach Kimimi Ashley said. "It was drizzling throughout the whole meet, we had a good hour rain delay and had to squeegee the courts. It's hard for a player to be waiting that long in the cold and then out there and only get to play an 8-game pro set."

Defending Class B-C state singles champion Spencer Ahlborn defeated Hunter Shima of Ronan 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 matchup of the dual.

Bulldogs' senior Kyle Schock defeated Payton Adams 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 slate.

Paden Alexander and Bryan Schock also picked up wins in singles action for Mission.

"We have so many boys that have the chance of playing different positions, singles or doubles that we are just basically looking now to mix some of the spots up throughout the season and see what boys do what for that final state team," Ashley said.

In the doubles, Karl Daniels and Trail Bundy of Mission defeated Kyle Tankey and Chase Allen in the first matchup, 6-2, 6-0. In the second matchup, Kats Yelsa and Chris Camel kept the Bulldogs undefeated by upending Tallon Fortin and Tyson Allen 8-2.

For Daniels, it was his first high school action of his career.

"I am very pleased with him being added to the team, not only because he is a good player but because he is gelling well with the other players," Ashley said. "The more experienced high school players have taken him under their wing and made his transition from middle school tennis to high school tennis a good one so far."

The transition so far has been a good one, as Daniels and the rest of the Mission team were able to get bragging rights over a Mission Valley rival in Ronan to begin the season.

"It's a new batch of kids this year in Ronan, so the kids didn't know each other that well," Ashley said. "They were just excited that they were getting to play their first match of the year after having the first scheduled match cancelled due to weather."

Mission will host Troy this Saturday at 11 a.m. "I have learned what I am already seeing in that they are a great bunch of kids and we love having them as part of our tennis team," Ashley said. "So many to work with and so much variety."
