Brandon Ly wasn’t the only big winner at this year’s state science fair.

A total of 16 Flathead Valley students competed at the Montana State Science Fair, and several brought home gold ribbons and high honors.

Following is a list of local competitors:

Deer Park School

n Sixth-grader Colin Norick won a silver ribbon for his project, “Solar Power.” Colin also took second place in the Montana Energy Education Council/NorthWestern Energy’s sixth-grade award.

n Seventh-grader Colter Norick won a gold ribbon for his project, “Piezoelectricity — An Alternate Electricity Source.” Colin also took first place in the Montana Energy Education Council/NorthWestern Energy seventh-grade award, won a Grand Award and won a Peterson Grand Award for having the best seventh-grade physical science project.

n Sixth-grader Samuel Paul won a gold ribbon for his experiment, “Got Marshmallows?”

Evergreen Junior High

n Seventh-grader Hannah Tullett won a silver ribbon for her “Singing Wine Glasses” experiment.

Helena Flats School

n Sixth-grader Mary Tracey won a silver ribbon for her project, “A Hermit Crab’s Home.”

Somers Middle School

n Sixth-grader Joe Zanni won a gold ribbon for his project, “Can You Handle the Stress?”

West Valley School

n Shane Engebritson, a sixth-grader, won a silver ribbon for his project, “ACCURATE or OFF?”

n Sixth-grader Kelsey Alexander won a gold ribbon for “It’s Monstrous!”

n Meagan Gillespie, a sixth-grader, won a bronze ribbon for her project, “Seeing the Forest for the Trees.”

n Sixth-grader Peyton Miller won a gold ribbon for “Long Legged?”

n Carson Brown, a seventh-grade student, won a silver ribbon for his project, “Radiation Escape.”

n Gabriella Mammana, a sixth-grader, won a silver ribbon for “Sweet and Sour.”

n Seventh-grader Caleb Jones took a silver ribbon for his project, “A Splash of Color.”

n Sixth-grader Danica Dierman won a gold ribbon for “Dinoflagellates.”

n Melanie Gassaway, a seventh-grader, participated with her project, “A Messy Situation.”
