Chiefs fall to Americans in series opener

SPOKANE - Jordan Messier, Kruise Reddick and Brendan Shinnimin each scored to lead the Tri-City Americans past the Spokane Chiefs 3-1 in Game 1 of the WHL Western Conference semifinals on Saturday night in front of 8,215 at the Spokane Arena.

Tri-City jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Reddick and Shinnimin scored on rebounds early in the first period. Spokane's Steve Kuhn scored his third goal of the playoffs late in the period to make it a 2-1 Tri-City lead after the first.

Drew Owsley had 34 saves for Tri-City, which won for the second time in seven tries this season at the Spokane Arena.

Spokane outshot Tri-City 35-18, including 9-3 in a scoreless second period.

James Reid had 15 saves for Spokane.

Game 2 is at 6 tonight at the Spokane Arena.
