SKIING
Bailey Swoboda of Dalton Gardens, a fifth-grader at Dalton Elementary, competes for the Schweitzer Alpine Racing School (SARS) in the J5 class, ages 9 and 10, this is her sixth season competing in slalom, giant slalom and Kombi.
Swoboda won the All-Around Award for best skier in the Emerald Empire Youth Ski League (EEYSL), which includes Silver Mountain, Lookout Pass, Mt. Spokane, 49 Degrees North, Blue Wood, Schweitzer Mountain and Team Independence. A few of the races drew athletes from Red Mountain in Canada and White Pass Resort.
She was a second-year member of the SARS Buddy Werner Championship Team. BWC consists of athletes 12 and under that compete in slalom and giant slalom. She helped the girls team place second, just getting edged out by two points by Mt. Bachelor Ski and Education Academy.
Lauryn Trueblood was second in the EEYSL All-Around as well as a second-year member of the BWC team. This was Lauryn's third year competing for SARS. She improved from a 10th-place finish last year to second this year, with several firsts in GS.
Bailey and Lauryn helped SARS win the overall team EEYSL championship for the first time since 2006.
Other local team finishers were Matthew Duchow (All-Around champion), Jayce Bailey, Alexi Panos, Demetri Panos, Jack Harper, Tom Harper and Nicole Harper.
