It's not exactly balmy outside yet, but at least through Tuesday, teams are starting to get in more games, and are rescheduling less.

Some thoughts:

Lake City High baseball coach Al Bevacqua had to have some mixed emotions the other day, watching the Lakeland Hawks beat his Timberwolves 10-4 in the first game of a doubleheader at Lake City.

Bevacqua is in his second year as the T-Wolves' head coach. But before that, he was coach of the Prairie Cardinals AA American Legion baseball program, in which some of the players come from Lakeland.

None of the current Hawks were on his AA squad with Prairie, but he did work with many of them a couple of years ago, as a volunteer assistant at Lakeland High under coach Jason Bradbury.

So while he was disappointed to see his current team get beat, he couldn't be blamed for feeling somewhat proud for the players he used to coach.

"It was a bit weird," Bevacqua said. "Honestly, we were outplayed today."

Lake City did come back to win the second game 6-3, a game called due to darkness after five innings.

OK, so Lake City sophomore Casey Stangel won't go the whole season without giving up a run in softball.

Still, the left-hander is still off to an impressive start, though her string of 38 straight scoreless innings to open the season came to a halt Tuesday at Lakeland when the Hawks' leadoff batter, Erin Ogden, homered over the center field fence. Lakeland also scored once in the sixth, though Lake City won 7-2 to improve to 7-0 heading into Wednesday's game with Post Falls.

Stangel, who verbally committed last fall to attend Missouri in 2013, allowed just nine hits in those first six games and struck out 77 in those 38 innings. She fanned 13 in a three-hit victory over Lakeland on Tuesday — her second win over Lakeland this year.

Stangel has already struck out 29 in two wins over Coeur d’Alene, and fanned a school-record 17 in a one-hitter vs. Post Falls last week.

Lake City’s offense has been pretty good through Tuesday as well, scoring 46 runs in the first seven games.
