COEUR d'ALENE - On a day that had everything from rain to snow, the Coeur d'Alene offense was left in the cold as Lake City sophomore Casey Stangel struck out 13 batters and the visiting Timberwolves defeated the Vikings 9-0 in a 5A Inland Empire League softball game on Tuesday at Larry Schwenke Field.

"It was a great team effort today," Lake City coach Laura Tolzmann said. "It was really nice to see a lot of different people step up. Becky had a great day and Mariah had a couple of good rips at the plate."

Becky Short and Mariah Linahan had three hits apiece for Lake City, with Short driving in two runs.

"On Saturday at Lewiston, I probably played the worst game I have all season," Short said. "I needed to make it up for my teammates. Playing against Cd'A has always been a big deal."

Stangel also drove in four runs with a two-run double in the fourth and a two-run home run in the sixth inning for Lake City (11-0, 7-0 5A IEL).

"Mariah (Linahan) has been doing a great job behind the plate," Stangel said. "She's been amazing behind the plate."

Lake City opened the scoring as Jamie Yurick doubled to lead off the second inning. She came around to score on an error by Coeur d'Alene pitcher Lindsie Scholwinski. After a hit by Linahan and a walk to Hailey Jackson, Short singled to put the Timberwolves up 2-0.

Lake City broke the game open in the fourth, scoring four runs with one out to take a 6-0 lead.

Lake City has beaten Coeur d'Alene by a combined 21-0 in their first three meetings this season.

"We need to learn to compete against these guys," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "Against her (Stangel), you can't let her get ahead in the count."

Coaches, players and parents spent the weekend getting the infield ready for play after a new 30-70 dirt-sand playing surface was installed.

"We started on the field on Friday and got it done at 2:30 today," Bieber said. "It's been the worst season in a while for us when it comes to weather. When it rains, we've got a huge lake in the outfield. Once we dug up the infield, we measured and we'd been pitching uphill for seven years. It took a while, but we got the field ready to play."

Vanessa Shippy had an RBI triple in the sixth for Lake City, which hosts Colville on Thursday.

Scholwinski, Nikki Ragsdale and Hailey Petit had one hit apiece for Coeur d'Alene, which hosts Post Falls on Thursday.
