ROYAL CITY - Kyle Spartveit scored a 41 to lead the Royal High School boys golf team in a three-way meet at Suntides Golf Course in Yakima last Thursday.
Naches scored best as a team with 174 for the nine-hole contest. Royal finished second at 219. Wahluke took third with 258.
In girls competition, Naches finished first with 234. Royal scored 269, and Wahluke did not field a team.
Spartveit had the second-best individual score of the day. Considering the conditions, it was quite good. The greens were punched and sanded and a little rough, and the weather was cold and windy.
Cody Janett scored 48 for the Knights, Clifford Lestor scored 56, and Brandon Smith had 74.
"Cody had one of his best rounds on the road ever," coach Andrew Perkins said.
For Wahluke, the scoring was 64 for Tony Martinez, 59 for Steven Martinez, 63 for Jack Yorgesen and 72 for Noe Mata. Jaime Gutierrez had a 78 but did not figure in the team scoring.
The scoring for the Royal girls was 60 for Tori Solis, 68 for Erin Wieldraayer and Samantha Solis and 73 for Sadie Bell.
"It was a good first round for Tori," Perkins said. "She struggled with her short game, but she looked good off the tee."
